Senior Wrestler Alyssa Hicks makes school history

Kaylee Poole

In a historic moment for Chillicothe High School Wrestling, senior Alyssa Hicks has become the first female wrestler to qualify for districts, breaking barriers and redefining expectations for girls in the sport.

Hicks, who is only in her second year as a wrestler, has quickly made a name for herself on the mat. Her journey started with a passion for the sport, but she initially faced hesitation from her parents due to wrestling’s aggressive nature. However, after dedicating herself to weightlifting and proving her resilience, she convinced them she was tough enough to compete.

“Wrestling has always been something I was interested in,” Hicks shared. “But my parents were worried I would get hurt. Once I started lifting, I showed them that I could handle it.”

As the only girl on her high school team, Hicks faced more than just physical challenges. She admitted that she was more concerned about the stigma of being a female wrestler than the risk of injury.

“I wasn’t so much afraid of getting hurt, but I was afraid of the judgment I might face,” she said.

Despite these concerns, Hicks persevered and thrived. Wrestling not only gave her the opportunity to compete but also shaped her character in ways she never expected.

“I love the sport and the competition, but I also love who it has made me,” Hicks reflected. “It’s shown me that I can do so much more and push through challenges I never thought I could.”

Her biggest achievement to date? Placing second at sectionals and making history as the first girl from Chillicothe High School to qualify for districts.

Hicks hopes her journey inspires other girls to consider wrestling, encouraging them to push past doubts and take on the challenge.

“I say go for it,” she advised. “I wrestled my sophomore year and didn’t win a single match, but it built my character in a way that made it all worth it. The losing never got to me. Wrestling will get you in the best shape of your life.”

At the District Tournament, Hicks unfortunately suffered an injury that ending her post-season journey.
